WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY: Izunaso Salutes NUJ
Distinguished Senator Osita Izunaso has extended warmest greetings to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and all media professionals in Nigeria on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day; acknowledging the vital role journalists play in promoting democracy, accountability, and transparency, giving voice to the voiceless, the marginalized and the oppressed in the society.
Senator Osita Izunaso remarked that,
"challenges faced by Journalists in the course of their duty, including threats to their safety, restrictions on their freedom of expression, and attacks on their person are enormous".
He commended Nigerian Journalists for their courage and doggedness, living up-to their bidding even in the face of harsh economic challenges and unfriendly working environment, while appreciating the NUJ for its dedication to defending Press Freedom and promoting ethical journalism standards.
Sen. Izunaso challenged government at all levels, Security Agencies and all stakeholders to strive to uphold the principles of Press Freedom, protect rights of Journalists, and ensure conducive environments for free media to operate.
"I commend the courage, dedication, and professionalism of Journalists around the world, who work tirelessly round the clock to keep the public informed and ensure that truth is brought to light. In an era of misinformation and attacks on Press Freedom, Journalists have continued to stand firm in their commitment to ethical reporting and upholding the principles of freedom of the press notwithstanding activities of few media scavengers".
Senator Izunaso an accomplished Journalist himself, reiterated his commitment to continue supporting Press Freedom and journalists in Nigeria.
He urged the media not to relent in upholding their core mandate and ethics of the profession of agenda setting, informing, holding government and the people accountable, and defending the ideals of a free and independent press.
