The Coordinator and some members of the Campus Crime Reporters Bayero University Kano Chapter have participated in a one day United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) engagement, recently held in Kano.
According to the UNDP representatives at the meet, the engagement is puttogether to assess the level of insecurity, illiteracy, poverty and underdevelopment in the region.
As the UN's organization dedicated to poverty alleviation and reducing inequalities through sustainable development, the UNDP works with countries to develop policies, leadership skills, and partnerships that promote sustainable development goals.
During the engagement, the UNDP held group discussions with critical key stakeholders, including Security Agents, farmers, commissioners, traditional rulers, and journalists.
The UNDP representatives disclosed that the meeting is aimed at gathering valuable insights and data on security, peace, and development across various States in Nigeria, including Abuja, Katsina, Kebbi, Zamfara, Jigawa, and Sokoto.
A group of seven journalists from Kano participated in an inclusive engagement with the UNDP, discussing major issues affecting the State. One journalist highlighted the challenges of budgetary implementation and performance in Kano, particularly in the education and health sectors.
According to findings, the state of education in Kano is very alarming, with poor infrastructure and inadequate resources. It was confirmed that there are some schools with over 300 students in a single class room, and lack basic teaching aids. According to investigations, in some cases, one person assumes the roles of teacher, cleaner, and headmaster; and despite the government's commitment to allocating 33% of the budget to education, the sector still faces significant challenges.
Reports also stated that health sector is facing major problems, including shortage of doctors and nurses, and many healthcare facilities in Kano are said to be understaffed, with volunteers serving as nurses and doctors. The report further stated that, the State government's focus on Kano metropolis has left other local government areas underserved, with poor access to healthcare infrastructure.
Other major issue discussed include environmental challenges, the need for a regulatory body to control waste disposal and management.
Participants also highlighted the issue of unemployment, which has contributed to increased insecurity and criminal activities in the State.
The UNDP's engagement in Kano is part of a broader effort to gather data and insights that will form policies and interventions aimed at addressing development challenges.
It is expected that by engaging with key stakeholders and understanding the complex issues facing the State, UNDP can provide targeted support to help Kano achieve sustainable development goals. END
