The Federal Road Safety Corps Boss, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed has urged road users to adopt attitudes and behaviours that will promote safety and preserve life.
He made the statement during the flag-off of the 2025 ember months enlightenment campaign which took place Wednesday November 5, 2025 in Portharcourt, River State.
In his remarks, Corps Marshal Shehu Muhammed regretted that distracted driving has evolved into one of the most prevalent risk behaviours on our highways, saying that mobile phone usage while driving, arguments with passengers, eating behind the wheel, emotional stress, drug and alcohol influence, speeding, and driver fatigue have collectively led to preventable crashes.
The Corps Marshal explained that the decision to flag off 2025 Ember Months Campaign in Rivers State is intentional, as the State represents one of the busiest transportation hubs in Nigeria, "The choice of Rivers State is even more apt during this festive period when there is a massive influx of travellers, increased commercial activities, and heightened vehicular movements; we believe that our choice of Rivers State as flag-off point for the 2025 Ember Month Campaign will yield the expected result of improved road safety awareness."
He revealed the crash statistics recorded between January and September 2025 nationwide as showing that, a total of 7,715 road traffic crashes occurred, representing a 10.04 percent rise compared to 7,011 crashes which occurred within the same period in 2024. He said, 24,674 persons sustained varying degrees of injuries, compared to 22,373 that were injured in 2024, saying that reflects 10.28 percent increase, and that 3,915 persons were killed 2025 as against 3,811 that were killed in 2024; indicating an increase by 11.55%.
Concluding Corps Marshal Shehu Muhammed said, the FRSC has commenced the implementation of programme outlines for safe and secured road transportation in the Ember Months, emphasizing that sensitisation exercise has commenced with a national press conference, nationwide road shows, mass advocacy in motor parks, churches, mosques, and major market centres.
He said all Commanding Officers have been directed to immediately intensify aggressive stakeholder relations and deepen community-based sensitisation to address the human factors responsible for road crashes.
