Izunaso Salutes Gov Uzodinma on Persons With Disabilities Bill
Distinguished Senator Osita Izunaso, member representing Imo West Senatorial District, Chairman Senate Committee on Capital Market and Institutions, has commended his brother, Governor Hope Uzodinma for his landmark action of domesticating the Persons with Disabilities Bill in Imo State, by signing the all-important and long awaited legislative act into law; describing the action as a testament to Governor Uzodimma’s genuine interests in promoting inclusivity, general participation and overall interest of the citizens of Imo State.
Distinguished Senator Izunaso, a reknown philanthropist of International repute, also the Founder and Chairman board of Trustees of Kpakpando Foundation for Persons with Disabilities, said, "the Persons with Disabilities Bill is a vital legislative act, aimed at safeguarding the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities".
Recall that, Kpakpando Foundation activities and Sen. Izunaso's unrelenting advocacies being championed across the country to ensure full integration, rights, and development for persons with disabilities was critically instrumental to the establishment of the National Commission for Persons Living with Disabilities NCPWD, which was established few years ago.
In a Press Statement to the media, Senator Izunaso applauded Governor Uzodimma’s commitment to equality and social justice, emphasizing that the domestication of the Bill will go a long way to significantly enhance the lives of persons living with disabilities by ensuring they receive adequate support, opportunities, and protection under the law.
“His Excellency’s initiative to domesticate the Disabilities Bill, has fully demonstrated his genuine commitment and dedication to building a more inclusive society, where every individual is valued, given equal opportunities and empowered,” Senator Izunaso said “the Governor's action is highly commendable and a step in the right direction, for the benefit of the people of the State.
Distinguished Sen. Izunaso called on other States to follow suit and tow the line of Governor Uzodinma in prioritizing rights of persons with disabilities; urging stakeholders to endeavour work together in ensuring effective implementation of the Bill, while advocating for more policies with human face that promote inclusivity and equal participation for all citizens.
Also recall, that, in October, 2024, the Imo State House of Assembly passed a Bill to domesticate the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities Prohibition Act of 2018, while also repealing the existing Imo State Agency for Persons with Disabilities Establishment Law No. 8 of 2017.
Senator Izunaso while appreciating Governor Uzodinma, members of Imo State House of Assembly and all stakeholders that made the Bill possible, urges members of the Special Persons Community to fully embrace the opportunity presented by the establishment of the law, to maximise their full potentials in all facets of human endeavours.
