The Independent Electoral Commission INEC, Nigeria, is to commence the much expected Online Registration beginning from 28th of June, 2021.

The Chairman of the Commission Prof. Mahmood Yakubu stated this during a parley with Media Chiefs at the INEC headquarters, Abuja. 

The meeting which had in attendance Media Executives, Principal Staff and Technical Officers of the Commission had the NUJ National President, Comrade Chris Isiguzo leading the Media Chiefs to a robust deliberation.

In his remark, the INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu said that over 2,000 mobile equipments are already in place for the exercise in addition to individual registrations with self phone; he explained that the mobile equipments are for use in hinterlands where Voters are not familiar with the applications on android phones. The INEC Chairman revealed that he was particularly excited that the mobile equipments were designs of the INEC's in-house engineers stating that he is excited also, that the Online registration is being actualized after 25years of muting the idea in Nigeria. 

Prof Yakubu further disclosed that 2,600 physical centres shall be established to compliment the exercise and about 5,346 INEC Staff have been trained for the Job, explaining that adhoc Staff may be accommodated later, if the need arises.

Prof Mahmood who revealed that the exercise is expected to last for about a year, appealed to the media and the general public to join hands with the INEC to ensure success of the all important exercise, so as to put in place a credible electoral system for the country.

Speaking, the NUJ National President, Comrade Chris Isiguzo applauded the INEC boss and the Commission for a job well done and taking a bold step in the right direction; promising that the media will do all they could to support the brilliant initiatives of the Commission. 

The NUJ President however advised INEC to spread its tentacles to reachout to other stakeholders for uptimum results. End
